The Plain City Chapter DAR met Sept. 3, 2025, at the Canaan Township Hall. Twelve chapter members were in attendance: Joy Ballard, Barb Berman, Jody Carney, Wanda DuPuis, Linda Fette, Joanna Haslam, Kelly Hicks, Corie Jakes, Janet Kaufman, Jennie Lester, Valerie Merideth, and Marion Stenner. Also present were guest speaker Ginny Johnson, guest Nina Boerger, and DAR husbands Rick Kaufman and Larry Ballard.

The meeting opened with the DAR ritual, including the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, the Preamble to the Constitution, the American’s Creed, and singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Regent Joy Ballard welcomed guest speaker Ginny Johnson, who presented “Obsolete, Odd and Absolutely Ooky” with photos and information about the DAR Museum in Washington, D.C.

Chaplain Janet Kaufman offered a devotional message focused on Romans 12:10: “Love others, take delight in honoring them.”

Secretary Wanda DuPuis conducted roll call, with each member sharing a highlight of their summer, and read the minutes from the May 10, meeting.

Kelly Hicks presented the National Defense report, highlighting National POW-MIA Day and honoring the memory of those unaccounted for while supporting their families.

She also reminded members of key historical dates: the adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777; its first use in battle at Cooch’s Bridge in Delaware on Sept. 3 of that year; the Treaty of Paris ending the war in 1783; Patriots Day on Sept. 11; and the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17.

The chapter has remained active in the community. Vice Regent Kelly shared thank-you cards from students the chapter sponsored for admission to the Motts Military Museum.

As Community Classroom and Literacy Chair, she will read “We the Kids: The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States” by David Catrow to 10 fourth-grade classrooms at Jonathan Alder. Each classroom will receive a poster of the Preamble and the book “Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution” by Jean Fritz, and each student will receive a bookmark.

The chapter also has a Constitution-themed window display at the Plain City Historical Society and a display case at the Plain City Library.

Members are looking forward to their October field trip to Fort Laurens, the only Revolutionary War fort in Ohio, where they will enjoy a self-guided tour and visit the museum in Bolivar.

The Plain City Chapter will also participate in upcoming community events, including Plain City’s Fall Fun Fest at Pastime Park on Oct. 18 from 2–6 p.m., where they will hand out pencils, and the Alder Veterans Day Ceremony at the Junior High on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., where the chapter will again provide refreshments.
