Strangers to Sisterhood: The West Jefferson Ox Roast Royalty
By Victoria Hansen
Every Labor Day weekend since 1953, the West Jefferson Ox Roast has brought our small village together. Families gather in Garrette Park, friends reconnect over famous ox sandwiches, and neighbors celebrate traditions that have lasted for generations. Among the highlights of the weekend is the Ox Roast Royalty Program, which celebrates leadership, community service, and sisterhood.
The Royalty Program gives young girls from across Madison County the chance to serve as ambassadors. Categories include Sweetheart (grades K–2), Little Miss (grades 3–5), Junior Miss (grades 6–8), and Miss (grades 9–12). Participants represent West Jefferson at parades, festivals, and events throughout Ohio. Beyond tiaras and sashes, the program emphasizes friendship, teamwork, and community pride.
For my family, this tradition has been especially meaningful. When my younger daughter Eliza Jane first competed, she earned the Sweetheart title, while her older sister Nora didn’t place. That first year was tough—supporting a sibling on stage and at every parade wasn’t easy—but it taught Nora resilience. She practiced her speech, learned from the experience, and returned the following year to win Junior Miss Queen, while Eliza earned Little Miss First Attendant. Both girls discovered not only the joy of wearing a crown but also the deeper lessons of perseverance and confidence.
Some of their favorite memories come from traveling to parades across Ohio, waving from floats, and even meeting Miss Ohio along the way. The girls have built friendships that extend beyond our town and carry the pride of representing West Jefferson wherever they go.
We are deeply grateful to the dedicated volunteers and directors, past and present, who pour their hearts into this tradition.
From the late Donna Warner, whose kindness shaped so much of the program, to today’s director, Tasha Gantner, and her husband Sam, whose tireless support makes it all possible, their work ensures that this legacy continues to thrive.
For our family, the Royalty Program has been more than just an extracurricular activity; it has been like a second family, supporting and encouraging the girls in all of their endeavors beyond the Ox Roast. I am proud to be part of this program and of the community it represents.
As parents, we see firsthand that the Ox Roast Royalty is more than a pageant—it’s an experience that shapes character, builds community, and creates unforgettable memories. The tiaras may sparkle, but it is the friendships, lessons, and pride in our community that shine brightest. I want to thank our community, every volunteer, and every supporter who makes the Ox Roast Royalty possible. You have given our family a second family, filled with encouragement and joy, and we are truly grateful to be part of this amazing experience.
