New scam involves faux Plain City invoices

From the Village of Plain City

The Village of Plain City is alerting the public to an ongoing phishing scam targeting individuals involved in development projects and permit applications. Several people have reported receiving fraudulent emails that appear to come from the village. These messages often contain fake invoices—frequently displaying the village logo—and instruct recipients to wire funds as part of the permitting process.

Plain City joins a number of other communities across Ohio that have reported similar scams in recent weeks. The village does not request payment via wire transfer, nor does it collect payment outside of secure, official channels. The Plain City Police Department has been notified.

In the meantime, individuals are encouraged to remain vigilant and take the following precautions:

Verify the sender’s email address. Official village correspondence will come from an @plaincityohio.gov email account.

Confirm suspicious requests. When in doubt, contact the village offices directly at (614) 873-3527 before responding or sending any funds.

Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unexpected or unsolicited emails.

Never wire money based solely on an email request.

Community members with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the village for further guidance.
